It has been a while since I’ve posted some new posts on this blog. I’ve been working on a couple of new projects and they have unfortunately taken a lot more of my time than I originally anticipated.

Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

However, before we continue, it would be a good idea to consider what your Unique Selling Proposition or USP is as this will help you to pinpoint what makes your business unique in a world of identical competitors, you will not be able to target your sales efforts successfully.

In order to uncover your USP and to use it to power up your sales:

  • You’ve got to put yourself in your customer’s shoes;

  • You’ve got to identify what motivates your customers’ behavior and buying decisions; and

  • You’ve got to discover the real reasons your customers buy your product instead of a competitor’s or vice versa.

The following questions will help you to uncover your USP:

  • What makes your business unique?

  • What do you offer your target market that separates you from the rest of your competition?

  • Why should a customer buy from you instead of your competition?

  • What do you or can you provide that your competition does not in order to encourage your customers to buy from you?

  • What are your customers’ “wants and needs”?

Successful business ownership is not about having a unique product or service; it’s about making your product stand out… even in a market filled with comparable items.

You’ve got to discover what would make them come back again and again whilst ignoring your competition. The answer may be as simple as quality, convenience, reliability, friendliness, cleanliness, courtesy or your customer service.

Remember, price is never the only reason people buy. Emotions are often the major factor in people buying. If your competition is beating you on pricing because they are larger, you have to find another sales feature that addresses your customer’s needs and then build your sales and promotional efforts around that particular feature.

So before you decide on your website theme it is imperative that you define a strong USP first… and then clearly state your USP at the front of your website in order to capitalize on your USP so that your visitors and potential clients instantly distinguish your uniqueness and what you have to offer.

However, in order for your website to be successful your traffic needs to be highly targeted and that is why you should take the time to clearly define your USP and develop your site around it – it makes it so much easier to target the right traffic for your site.

After all if the majority of your visitors aren’t specifically interested in our USP:

They’re not going to opt in to our email offer;

They’re not going to be interested in our newsletter;

They’re not going to be interested in our “follow up offers”; and

Ultimately… They’re not going to buy our products!

It’s as simple as that.

You want to target only your defined niche; nothing else.

So, how can you be sure that you will only attract people interested in your USP?

You simply ‘pre-qualify’ all your website traffic! After all, you don’t want to spend our time and efforts (and possibly money) bringing traffic to our website that isn’t specifically interested in what you have to offer.

The pre-qualified traffic already knows and trusts you because they’ve already been to your website, read your articles or your blog posts and have a relationship with you.

The cold traffic, on the other hand, knows nothing about you. It isn’t hard to guess which group of visitors you’ll be more likely to convert into a steady stream of long-term customers.

Yes, but… How do I get visitors to my website I can hear you shout! After all you do need to get visitors to your website before you can ‘pre-qualify’ them.

Simple! You are going to tell them that you are here and that you’ve got some really incredible offers just waiting for them, a lot of them for free, just for stopping by.

You are going to show them, that you know what you are talking about, before they even hit your homepage.

And now I can hear you ask “how can you show them what you are talking about before they even hit your homepage?”

You will do this by simply becoming a respected leader in the marketplace of your chosen niche.

To do this you will have to do a bit of work. What? Are you actually saying that I have to do some work? Yes, as I’ve mentioned previously in other articles, there is no such thing as a silver bullet. There is no such thing as a push button system. Remember that you are building a business, one from which you should be able to benefit for many years to come.

Sure there are tools and resources out there that can speed things up a bit but no matter what there will still be a fair amount of work to be done. Remember that there is also a learning curve to use those tools – so choose wisely.

Therefore in order to become a reputable marketer in your chosen niche you will have to have quality, entertaining content for your niche.

These can be in the form of articles, courses, reports, videos and entertaining/informative emails for your list.

One of the things that you should always keep in mind is that the cornerstone, the very foundation, of your business is going to be your email list.

Your number one priority – at all times – is to BUILD YOUR LIST!

And the one way to pre-sell your website traffic is by offering all your visitors something of value in exchange for their email address. Once a visitor has subscribed to your list, you can keep in touch with them via email, and provided you send them useful and entertaining emails, you will eventually establish a relationship with them and build trust.

The one thing you must realize is that you will have to create quite a considerable amount of content to have an impact. This is where so many make one of the biggest mistakes that they can make; and that is by not writing enough articles to make that so important impact.

You must have realized by now that it takes some work on your part to write a 100 articles, but once you get there, your reward of pre-qualified traffic will be well worth the effort. This needn’t be such a chore if you put a plan together to write these articles and once you get there your reward of pre-qualified traffic will be well worth the effort. (Alternatively you can always pay someone else to write your articles etc. for you.)

However, with a bit of forward planning you can write the articles in such a way that, with very little effort, you can convert them into more ‘valuable’ courses, reports and eBooks.

It really does not matter what niche you’re in or what the demographics of your visitors are, you should realize that your business is wholly based on providing information for your visitors. The information you provide can be in the form of articles, reports, eBooks, audio courses, videos, etc. We all know that the reason people spend time on the web is to find information and that is what you are going to provide them. The best information that you can provide.

The reality is that if you do not provide the information your visitors are looking for, they’ll simply move on. The reverse of this is also true, if you provide them with what they’re looking for, then they’re more than likely stick around to see what else you can provide them (in the same niche) and it wont matter whether the information is free or they’ve got to pay for it.

Regrettably, you can only spend a certain amount of time researching, designing and writing. This means that there has to be a trade off with the rest of the things you have to do to run your business and you then find that the time you have is really limited.

You should always try to use your active voice and speak to your readers. You will find that your readers will welcome the fact you’re talking to them and not at them. Make your articles conversational as though you are talking to a friend. And I’m sure that you’ll probably find it easier to write that way as well.

You should try to be creative and entertaining. The one thing you’ve got to do is to try to separate your articles from all the others out there. Think about what you want to write about and use your opening paragraph to bait the hook, to draw upon a fishing analogy, and grab your reader’s attention. Draw pictures with your words and think about using relevant quotes enhance your article.
