The Three Assassins of Prosperity – Fear of Failure

Hi Guys

Following from yesterday article titled The Three Assassins of Prosperity – Fear of Rejection we will take a quick look at the Fear of Failure.

Failure is a very general term that will mean different things to different people. Many believe that if their plans go wrong they will look a fool and be ridiculed; or that no one will want to know them.

Over the years I have seen many occasions where fear was the reason for not starting something i.e. You’ve got a brilliant idea about starting a business but you avoid doing so just in case you fail. Now according to me, that is failure. And when I say this, I am not berating anyone because I have been there myself.

For most of us it is a lot easier to dream of having our own business and becoming a millionaire one day, rather than taking the chance to start that business and possibly failing. This is related to the fact that the majority of people appear to live in relatively comfortable circumstances. They can pay their bills (if only just) and can maintain the relative level of comfort and security that they have currently in their life. This naturally makes them more sensitive to anything that may affect the status quos. It also makes it a lot harder for them to tolerate any feelings of fear.

But if you fail to achieve more than you are currently achieving are you not guaranteed to continue living the same existence that you are currently living now anyway.

The fear of failure is often one of the most paralyzing phobias. For many, failure is the supreme nightmare: a frightful horror they must avoid at any cost. And the simplest way to do this is never to take a risk.

For many the risk of failure is not something easily gambled upon. But the fear of failure may actually produces, what you fear the most; the loss of security. In other words, that which you fear shall be your reward, unless you find the courage to face your fear and do the thing anyway.

The fear of failure is something that holds many people back from taking positive steps to achieve their goals in life or from taking the action needed to make progress.

Failure need not be final, though that is how many view it. Failure is an action, not an identity. It is not who we are; rather it is an event or situation, or it is related to a choice we have made. Failing is how humans learn.

Failure is an idea that takes on power according to how much truth we attach to it in any situation. It’s one thing to say, “I gave it a shot and it didn’t work”. It’s another thing to proclaim, “I failed”. The former sounds like a temporary setback, while the latter sounds like a permanent blot on your record.

Failure depends upon your viewpoint. If you can learn from it dust yourself off and start again, then you have not failed but learned that the approach you took was the wrong one. Analyze your setbacks. Don’t get focused on a pet project that is not making the grade. You must learn to let go in order to start again.

Don’t make a big deal about failure or setbacks. If we fail at something, we get up, dust ourselves off and try something else.

If you care to look around you will find example after example of people who failed their way to success. They just never gave up.

If you ever doubt yourself, as we all do from time to time, if you ever wonder if you have what it takes to create something special, keep one thing in mind:

Most people may not agree with you, and they may not even like you, and to crown it all they may think you’re crazy. But most of them are broke, unhappy, and unfulfilled. They live a life of quiet desperation; spending hours every day drinking, sitting in front of the idiot box – telling people like you why things can’t be done!

Remember that failure is part of your long-term growth and if you take important lessons from it, it will only set you back temporarily.
